Marketing Director
What sparked your desire to work in a senior living community?
It started with my own parents. Several years ago they needed assisted living. I knew nothing about senior communities so counted on the various marketing people with whom I came in contact to educate me. Their expertise and compassion made a world of difference to my family – I knew then it was a career I would eventually pursue.
What drew you to Summit Place?
The same things that bring our many residents – experienced, devoted and fun staff, health club w/pool, the wide range of programs and activities that are offered and an incredibly beautiful setting. I wanted to be part of the team that works so diligently to provide an enriching and engaging lifestyle.
What is a favorite part of your job?
People! I love welcoming families to Summit for a visit. Everyone has unique life stories and circumstances so no two tours are alike. It is both my pleasure and privilege to help families navigate senior housing options, enabling them to make the right decision for themselves and their loved ones. When I see a new resident making friends and having fun, it really warms my heart.
Is there a resident story that stands out to you?
There are so many – here’s one I love! A while back, a resident’s daughter stopped me in the hallway to tell me how much Summit Place has meant to her father. He “reluctantly” moved in – he was sure it was just going to be a sort of “place-holder”. One day her father, after having lived here for several years, told her he had made 30 good friends in his time at Summit. He talked about the morning coffee group and how much he enjoyed that. The dinner club, the entertainment etc. – she told me how happy and content he was here. Her last comment was “keep up the good work you are making such a difference in the lives of many seniors”.
More About Libby…
My husband and I like golfing (when Minnesota weather allows), reading, taking walks, hanging out with friends and family. We love to travel – on my wish list is Australia and Norway.

What sparked your desire to work in a senior living community?
I have a friend who was in hospitality sales for many years, like me, and recently moved to a Director of Sales job in a Senior Living Community. She posted on social media how much she loves the community’s residents and assisting prospective residents and their families. After meeting her for coffee and seeing her enthusiasm in person, I decided that would be a great career move for me as well. I was thrilled to get this opportunity at Summit Place!
What drew you to Summit Place?
As part of the interview process, Libby gave me a tour of the community. There were many residents out socializing and enjoying the spaces and activities that Summit Place offers. Libby knew all the residents that we met by name and they knew her. I felt like this was a special place even before I was hired.
What is your favorite part of the job?
I love meeting new people and have always had a passion for customer service. The opportunity to cultivate relationships through the sale process and know that these relationships will continue as they become a part of our community is exciting.
More About Teri…
I met and married my husband while working in Yellowstone National Park over 30 years ago. We have two adult children, Ryan and Julia, and live in Burnsville with our dog and cat. Our family enjoys travel, Wild Hockey and Sunday dinners.
I love music, reading, Twins baseball, classic old movies, walking and yoga.

Laurie

Laurie Sparks
Director of Wellness
How did you get started in the Senior Living industry?
Growing up, I had a close relationship with my grandparents, who have always played an essential role in my life. When I was a student in high school, my grandparents lived in a senior community. I applied for a position in the Activities Department at their new home because I wanted to spend more time with them. I was delighted when I heard the news, they wanted me to join their team.
From there, I learned my love and passion for working with seniors. You could say my grandparents showed me the light and guided me to do what I love.
Did you have special training or education that helps with your current role?
At the end of my education journey, I was fortunate to have done my internship at Courage Kenny in the Aquatics department, where I fell in love with the aquatics and fitness world. I started as a Fitness Coordinator at Summit Place and eventually moved into The Director of Wellness role. I am blessed to wake up each morning and potentially make a difference in someone’s life.
More About Laurie…
When not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I have three beautiful nephews that I adore and spend a lot of time with. Summer means spending time at the lake together, teaching the boys how to swim, and passing on my love of the water. Staying healthy and active is a high priority for me and constantly helps me grow as a fitness professional. I recently have embarked on a weightlifting regimen and also enjoy long walks, rollerblading, and keeping up with old teammates to play softball. Some of my other passions include cooking, traveling, and trying new restaurants.

What sparked your desire to work in a senior living community?
After working for 15+ years connecting and protecting seniors in a public safety capacity, I wanted to continue serving the older population.
Did you go through any special training or education that helps with your current role?
I hold a BA degree in psychology. I also had numerous training sessions at my previous career where I learned more about the aging process and communicating with older people.
What is a favorite part of your job?
Seeing residents throughout the day who exemplify being grateful. I also enjoy problem-solving and fulfilling resident needs.
What makes your community stand out from other senior communities?
Without a doubt, it is the tenure of our employees that raises Summit Place above our other senior communities. We have an experienced staff who have proven that longevity does indeed create a stable and strong community.

What sparked your desire to work in the senior living industry?
When Summit Place opened in 2003, I was hired on as a part–time receptionist. I immediately fell in love with the residents and community. My grandparents passed away at a younger age and I feel I missed out on so many experiences with them. I enjoy and appreciate the wisdom the residents share with me every day. They consistently remind us that the journey of life goes fast, so it’s important to let the little things go, make the best of every day, and embrace the challenges.
What’s special about your job?
Being the Director of Programs, brings a wide variety of tasks, challenges and lots of enjoyments. From bus excursions, to live entertainment and onsite programs, our plates are always full. The residents love to learn, try new things, and truly appreciate all we do for them. They challenge our team of wonderful program leaders to offer some of the best programs. We know the value is high when it comes to enriching their lives and we believe every day is a chance to make a difference in someone’s life.
How do you decide which activities and programs to offer?
Our programs are based on resident wishes and wants. Ideally, we offer a variety of programs incorporating all areas of wellness; physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, vocational, and social.
What are your residents top 3 favorite activities?
Bonfires, Happy Hours, and educational classes about relevant and current world issues.
What are your two best attended events?
Every year we host a backyard BBQ for residents, families and community members. By far this is our community favorite! Our annual resident gala in December is a close second though.
What is your favorite program/activity?
Life Review. We travel through their lives beginning with some of their fondest childhood memories. This program is life changing for all involved.
Are there programs that residents themselves lead?
Yes – Summit has many clubs – Card Clubs include: Bridge, 500, Hand and Foot, Poker, Mahjong etc. We also have Cribbage, Scrabble, Coffee Club, Knitting and more.
What sets your programming apart from other senior communities?
We plan a wide range of programs that are meaningful, intellectual, fulfilling, and enjoyable. The resident’s biggest complaint is that there are too many choices, and we can’t get to everything. We take those complaints as compliments since we always want the residents to have something to engage in and options to suit all needs.

Erika Takahashi
Director of Reflections
A little about your job…
I oversee the operation of Reflections (dementia care) neighborhood. As I oversee the non-medical side of our care, I team up with the Clinical Director to provide exceptional care for our residents.
What sparked your desire to work with those living with dementia?
I am originally from another country where we speak other than English. When I was just starting my career in senior housing community field about 18 years ago, I was told from someone that I should not work for people with dementia because of “language barrier.” However, I am finding more and more that there are so many other tools to work with people with dementia. Sometimes we don’t even need spoken words. It is more about having creativity, individualizing and building relationship with each individual, which I treasure working especially with people with dementia.
What training or education helped prepare you for this career?
I am a Board Certified Music Therapist. The curriculums we go through for our certification are very diverse from musical, interpersonal to clinical skills. It made me to have a concrete base for working in healthcare field.
How would you describe the job of “Reflections Director”?
I made a joke about my job as “mini social worker without license” however, it really is not a bad description of what I do. I am an advocate for residents with dementia and their family/friends, the resources related to dementia care, and a facilitator of residents’ engagement.
What are your residents top 3 favorite activities?
Exercise is always the number one favorite. Residents also enjoy any type of conversational groups and music.
What is your favorite activity to participate in with residents?
I don’t have any favorite but I particularly enjoy activities that involve creativity and active participation such as active games (bowling, ring toss etc.) and arts/crafts. It is always great to see resident’s face brighten up from the accomplishment and creation.
What are the benefits of moving to a dementia care neighborhood versus trying to take care of a loved one on your own?
Dementia care is all about having good team work and support system. Otherwise, caring your loved one becomes too much on your shoulder. As you navigate through different things in your life, perhaps your job, other family members of yours, social life etc., having professional’s support and care makes your life much more structured and easier both physically and mentally. Having professional’s support also means that you will have someone knowledgeable when you seek for resources, make decision on the next steps for your loved one etc. Also, benefits for your loved one are socialization, structured routine, balanced diet, more medical/non-medical attention etc.
More About Erika…
What are you most proud of?
Living in another country from where I was born and raised, and making a great career out of it.
Do you have pets? If so, tell us a bit about them.
I have a cat named Anon. I treat her as my baby and of course spoil her a lot. She was a stray and I rescued her when she was a tiny kitten. Spending time with her is one of my most relaxing moments at my home.
Favorite Movie?
I enjoy watching movies based on the true events, but I like variety of movies some of which include documentary, romantic comedy, mystery, drama, action, and even some horror.
Top travel destination on your list?
Italy and France! We keep revisiting these 2 countries in recent years.
Tell us a little about yourself.
Family is the most important thing for me. I have family members living long distances, but we keep very close relationship. We enjoy having meals with long chats, playing games, traveling together, video chatting regularly.

What sparked your desire to work in a senior living community?
Seniors are SO vibrant! I love hearing about their lives and their great stories. They have an endless supply of knowledge, experiences and advice.
Did you have special training or education that helps with your current role?
I’ve worked in many different roles at previous jobs – Level 1 trauma center, 911 dispatching and administrative work for a realty company – thus I’ve acquired a broad, diverse skill-set.
What is the best part of your workday?
When I get to help someone. No matter how small the task – opening the door, assisting at the front desk, directing someone in the hallway – I love being able to make a person’s day just a little bit brighter.
How does Summit stand out from other senior communities?
The feel the attitude of everyone here is amazing. It is truly a community filled with R.E.S.P.E.C.T, friendship, teamwork, kindness, understanding and FUN!
